The condition of your floors will make or break the appearance of your home. Keeping your floors clean will protect the health and safety of your family. It will also create a clean and pleasing environment for everyone to enjoy, and make a great and welcoming impression on guests.
Be sure to wash and sanitize floors as part of your normal cleaning routine.
Also keep up with waxing floors, as needed, according to your workplace’s general level of wear and tear.
A good gauge to know if it’s time to wax your floors again is to check for stains, spots and pitting in the floor’s surface.
Floor Cleaning Tip
Always vacuum your floor before washing. This way you pick up any crumbs, dust and debris rather than spreading dirt around the floor as you’re washing and wiping it. It’s helpful to use the vacuum attachment tools to get into the corners and along the edges of your floor which is where most of the dirt collects anyway.
Don’t have a vacuum handy? A good old broom and dust pan will work just as well.
Below find some simple methods for cleaning a variety of floor surfaces:
How to Wash Linoleum Floors: Add a small amount of mild detergent to a gallon bucket of warm water and scrub with a cloth or mop. Rinse by mopping with clear water.
How to wax linoleum floors: buff in some hard car wax or floor wax. Use a light coat. After 30 minutes, apply a second coat.
TIP: Use your garbage bin as a pail when cleaning the floor. You may need to have several solutions in different pails. For example, cleaning solution in one and plain water for rinsing, in another. Using your empty trash pail as a cleaning bucket means you end up with a clean garbage pail.
How to Remove Old Floor Wax from a Floor: Mix up a solution of ¼ cup water softener and 4 cups warm water.
How to Clean a Variety of Floor Surfaces
How to clean brick floors: Scrub with a mix of powdered detergent in warm water. Rinse well.
How to clean concrete floors: squirt some dish soap into a bucket of hot water and mop into the floor.
How to wash marble floors: Squirt a small amount of dish soap into a bucket of hot water and mop floor with this mixture.

Homemade Floor Polish Recipe
1 Tablespoon beeswax
2 cups mineral oil
Add this mixture to a double boiler, heat to melt together. Let cool and use a soft cloth to buff into floor.
Homemade Wood Floor Cleaner Recipe
4 Tablespoons white vinegar
4 Tablespoons water softener
1 gallon warm water
Wood floors love oil. You can either add a few drops of lemon oil to your wood floor washing solution, or buff with a very light amount of lemon oil after cleansing with the vinegar solution.
TIP: When applying oil to your wood floors, go very sparingly and rub in well. The oil will make your floor slippery until it absorbs in completely. You’ll want to go over your freshly oiled floors with a clean buffing cloth to make sure the oil is completely absorbed.
TIP: Get rid of pet urine odors and residue in your wood floors by mixing ½ cup white vinegar with 2 cups warm water. Thoroughly wet the affected area and then follow by sprinkling on baking soda. Scrub well and observe the foaming action. When the foaming stops, rinse well and dry with cotton cloths. If very saturated, you may want to run a fan for a while to hasten drying and prevent mold from forming.
TIP: How to remove small scratches from a wood floor: rub a small amount of floor wax into the wood with steel wool.
